I met NGUYEN VAN HOANG on my first visit to Vietnam in June 2000. I had booked a day tour around Ho Chi Minh City before leaving Australia. He was my guide.

The beginning of my day with Mr Nguyen was not auspicious. I had travelled overnight by road from Hoi An and only arrived at the hotel three hours before the tour was due to begin. I did not really feel like another lengthy day on the road.

I am pleased to report that within half an hour my mood had improved considerably thanks to Mr Nguyen's informative conversation and his charming, easy manner. I quickly forgot my tiredness as he introduced me to the exotic delights of the Cao Dai temple at Tay Ninh and the more
sombre stories of the Cu Chi tunnels complex. It was a memorable day.

I met him again eighteen months later for an informal tour of the coastal area around Phan Thiet. He was again a very attentive and considerate host and generous with his time as I clambered around Cham monuments and other tourist sights.

Touring Vietnam was a good decision in the first place. It is a fascinating and beautiful country and the people are very friendly and welcoming. None more so than Mr Nguyen, who was the ideal guide for an independent traveller.

Hoang is a totally professional and extremely flexible guide. His English is excellent and very helpful when he helps as the go between when bargaining in the markets and shops. Tell him exactly what you want and he makes every effort to make it happen. From booking accommodation, providing transport, guiding tours and showing you the social side of his city. Tell him your budget and he will tailor everything to stay within it. Change your mind for your itinerary and that's no problem for him, he just takes it in his stride and again it all happens just as you want! Want him to travel the country with you?...No problem for him. Totally dependable.
